Hey kids!

Blink just dropped by and asked me to tell you about his new and amazing Trading Post. At Blink’s Trading Post you will be able to purchase prizes with Monkey Moolah. All you have to do to earn a Monkey Moolah is attend class. Each class you attend, you earn one Monkey Moolah. Once you collect enough Monkey Moolah for the item of your choice, you can then purchase the prize! Blink has items like watches, Yo-Yo’s, footballs, and more! You can earn even more Monkey Moolah by bringing a friend to class. For each friend you bring, you get one Monkey Moolah. Did you get an A on a recent math test? Bring the test in to class and we will give you an extra Monkey Moolah. Blink also says that if you do outstanding work in the classroom, you can earn yourself one extra Monkey Moolah. So start earning your Monkey Moolah today so you can purchase all the prizes that Blink’s Trading Post has to offer!

Blink's Trading Post is at Math Monkey of NEWTON!!!

Dear Math Monkey Family,

Come and check out my new store, otherwise called Blink’s Trading Post! My Trading Post consists of Monkey Moolah and an assortment of prizes. Every class your child attends, he/she will receive one Monkey Moolah. The Monkey Moolah can then be used as currency to purchase various items. Other ways to earn Monkey Moolah includes bringing a friend to class, bringing to class an A on a math test, and exemplary work in the classroom. Monkey Moolah is also rewarded for each friend that enrolls in the Math Monkey program. When your child brings a friend to a trial class, he/she will earn an additional Monkey Moolah. For each of your child’s friends that enroll, he/she will receive four additional Monkey Moolah. Your child will keep his/her Monkey Moolah in their Trading Post Pouch until they have accumulated enough Monkey Moolah to purchase their desired prize. He/she will continue to collect Monkey Moolah and purchase items for as long as they are enrolled at Math Monkey. Blink’s Trading Post will help teach your child about money, the value of money and the importance of saving. My Trading Post will also give your child an additional incentive to do well in math and have fun at the same time!

Climb Higher,

Blink

Alex Seriy, Owner and Director of Math Monkey Knowledge Center of Newton, was quoted in the front page article Results put focus on math and science in the Newton Tab - By Chrissie Long on Wed Nov 28, 2007.

Alex Seriy, who opened Math Monkey last month, also notices the shortcomings in American math education.

“We [Americans] don’t make a good connection with math as a school subject and everyday life,” said Seriy, who was educated in Russia. “Mastering fundamental math concepts goes way beyond memorizing formulas. It teaches us the sense of direction that is so essential in every career.”

Math Monkey and the Russian Math School also allow children to progress at their own pace, grouping them in classes according to their ability. Because Newton schools award excelling students with more busy work (according to several parents, including former School Committee candidate Lucia Dolan) these outside math programs are attractive to parents seeking to challenge their kids.

“A concept that could be challenging for one child at age 8, could be challenging for another at age 10,” Seriy said. “The reality is that kids learn differently and learn at different paces.”
