May 2008 Newsletter - Math Trivia

Here is the answer to the Math Trivia question that appeared in our May, 2008 newsletter.  This question came from Car Talk on NPR.

Question: A student is asked if the following number is a perfect square: 334,912,740,121,562. Crusty knows the answer immediately. What does Crusty know?

Answer: There is NO perfect square for this number.

Why: Because the units digit of any perfect square is determined by the units digit of its square root. Take the number one, for example, square it and you get one. Take the number two and square it, it comes out four. The number three comes out nine. But there is no number that you can square and get a two at the end. That's what Crusty knew.

Christ Church Event - February 10th, 2008

I can't believe it has already been two weeks since our event at Christ Church in Overland Park, Kansas.

I have to say that we had a wonderful time and the attendance was fabulous.  We had over 100 parents and kids that came out to experience Math Monkey and to see just how FUN math can be.  I want to thank everyone at Christ Church for their support and allowing us the opportunity to come in and speak.

We started with short presentation that gave the parents and kids a little background on Math Monkey.  During the presentation we showed everyone the Magic of 11.  After we walked thru the second problem we received applause from everyone and that was so nice to see (if you don't know the Magic of 11, come by Math Monkey of Leawood and ask Chris to show you).

After the presentation we split up into three groups and rotated between three different games.  Each group spent about 15 minutes playing What's My Number?, Blind Tic-Tac-Toe and Fishing.  As I walked around watching what was going on I think many of the parents were having just as much fun as the kids.

At Math Monkey we want to get out in the community and visit with parents in the most convenient locations.  If you have an organization that you would like for Math Monkey to visit, please contact Chris at 913-897-6284 to get more information.

Don't forget to visit our Scrapbook section to see pictures from the event!

Kansas Math Assessments are to be conducted between February 18th and April 14th, 2008 for grades 3-8.

Math Monkey of Leawood is proud to offer a FREE test prep class to all actively enrolled students.

Math Monkey’s standardized testing preparation course is a six-week module designed to give kids the confidence they need to effectively take standardized, high-stakes tests.  This type of testing is designed to establish whether or not children have met minimum state and/or federal standards. There is no way to truly “study” for the test, as the test is meant to cover the cumulative learning that takes place over the course of a school year.  However, Math Monkey has created a “refresher” style course that helps build test-taking confidence, speed and accuracy in arithmetic, problem solving skills to answer word problems, and testing short-cuts using Vedic math techniques.  This course is not designed to “teach” children the test, but rather to complement the knowledge they already have.  The following concepts will be covered over the six-week period:

  • Mental addition
  • Mental subtraction
  • Quick recall of multiplication tables
  • Special circumstances for quick multiplication
  • Division practice
  • Tackling word problems (break them down and get to the math)
  • Eliminating choices on multiple choice style tests
  • How to approach the test – Confidence techniques

When: Saturday mornings from 8:45-9:45 beginning January 19, 2008.

How Long: 6 weeks

Where: Math Monkey of Leawood located on the NE corner of 151st and Nall.
