Vedic Vine:  Here's an easy way to mentally get the square of numbers that end in 5: Start with a two digit number like 25. We want to find 25 squared.  First step - multiply the 2 by the next higher number 3 and get 6 - this is the first digit of your answer. Second step - compute 5 squared which is 25 and those are the last 2 digits of the answer.  The answer is 625.  For 45 squared, multiply 4x5 = 20, then 5 squared is 25.  The answer is 2025.  Try some more on your own.  Taken from VEDIC MATHEMATICS Teacher's Manual, Elementary Level by Kenneth R. Williams.

What do Sudoku & Word Problems

Have in Common?

by Raj Shah, Ph.D.

Have you ever done a Sudoku puzzle?

If so, then you know how to fill the boxes. A few random blocks are completed to get you started. (If you haven't tried Sudoku, you really should! They're quite fun and help keep you mentally sharp too! Try them free here: www.websudoku.com.)

Each time you work a puzzle, you have to choose a starting point. So you pick either a row, column, or block to focus on first -- which breaks the bigger puzzle into smaller, more manageable pieces.

Next, figure out which numbers are missing. In other words, working backward from what you do know.

Then, for each empty square, run the possibilities to see if a number has been used in that row, column, and block. Therefore you're eliminating the possibilities to see what's left.

And in just those three steps, you've used three different problem-solving strategies: breaking a problem into a smaller one, working backward to find an answer; and eliminating the possibilities.

Of course these strategies come naturally to adults because they've been in daily use for many years!

But for children, it's a different story. They may sometimes automatically use these strategies, but they often forget to or struggle with applying them when translating word problems into solvable equations in math.

So it's important to encourage your children -- whether they are taking a summer Math Monkey course or not --  to work on word problems AND Sudoku puzzles. Those who learn to enjoy problem solving will do well not only in math but in many other areas of school and life too!

Remember -- word problems don't go away, they turn into real life problems.

Class Descriptions

Suggested Troop Placement:

Green Monkeys; Pre K - K (If Qualified.)

Lemur; K-2nd Grade

Chimpanzee; 2-3 Grade

Orangutan; 3-5th Grade

Baboon; 4-6th Grade

Gorilla; 5-7th Grade

Note:  All children are placed in classes based on individual ability and assessment.  Not all children will qualify for our program.  The suggested placement above is for reference only.  Certain classes may have prerequisite classes.

Green Monkeys (Pre-K) – Students will practice telling time, estimating, recognizing and writing numbers from 1-20, introduction to addition and subtraction, concepts of more and less, graphing, pattern recognition, 2 and 3-dimentional shapes, measurement, and money. (Recommended for Pre-K Grade)

Welcome to the Jungle (WTTJ) - Lemurs – Designed to build early number sense and mental math techniques. Students will be adding and subtracting single and double digits, learning the concept of multiplication, time and money. (Recommended for K-1st Grade)

Look Ma, No Hands! (LMNH) - Chimpanzees – Focuses on mental addition and subtraction.  Students will be learning the complements of 10 to add and subtract larger numbers and to perform calculations from left to right. (Recomm. for 1st-3rd Grade)

Time is Money (TIM) Chimpanzees – Focuses on real-life math using money and time as the basis.  Students will learn the Vedic technique of All from 9, Last from 10 and other techniques to make change and calculate time. (Recommended for 1st-3rd Grade)

Jungle Swing (JS) Chimpanzees – Students will understand how to recognize patterns and repeated addition as a precursor to multiplication, mental doubling, missing addends. (Recommended for 1st – 3rd Grade)

Primate Pals (PP) Chimpanzees – Students will use place values of numbers, rounding and estimation, practice various types of measurement (ounces, pounds, cups, etc.) compute elapsed time, learn one-step & two step-word problems for +, -, x, & division. (Recommended for 2nd – 4th Grade)

Canopy Climbers (CC) Chimpanzees - Students will work with line segments, line of symmetry, 3 dimensional shapes, calculate perimeter, read graphs (pie charts and line graphs), be introduced to fractions, subtract mentally, solve small addition and subtraction word problems, and recognize number patterns. (Recommended for 2nd – 4th Grades)

Not All Thumbs (NAT) Orangutans – Using Vedic math techniques for mental addition and subtraction. Students will learn how to “look ahead” for addition and subtraction going from left to right. Really concentrates on the mental aspect and introduces pre-algebra techniques (positive and negative numbers). (Recommended for 3rd-6th Grades)

Multiplying Monkeys 1 (MM1) Orangutans – Using Vedic math techniques for mental multiplication. Students will learn how numbers relate to each other through doubling, halving, Magic of 9 and 11, and Nikhilam multiplication. (Recomm. for 3rd-4th Grade)

Real Life Safari 1 (RLS1) Orangutans - Students will learn how to translate words into meaningful math expressions to solve real-world word problems using a 5-step process. (Recommended for 3th-6th Grade)

Banana Bunches (BB) Baboons - Students will practice traditional and shorthand long division, convert fractions to decimals to percents, learn units of measure, graphing, interpret different types of graphs, practice perimeter and area of triangles, parallelograms and trapezoids, introduced to Pre-Algebra terminology. (Recommended for 3rd-7th Grade)

Multiplying Monkeys 2 (MM2) Baboons – Using Vedic math techniques for mentally multiplying double and triple digit numbers. Students will use doubling and halving techniques and Nikhilam multiplication to solve problems. (Recomm. for 3rd-7th Grade)

Banana Split (BS) Baboons – Fractions and decimals are the focus of this class using Vedic math techniques to reduce the number of steps to arrive at the correct answer. (Recommended for 4th – 7th  Grade)

Real Life Safari (RLS2) Baboons – This class uses the Vedic math techniques to translate words into math to solve word problems. (Recommended for 4th – 7th Grades)

Top of the Vine (TOTV) Gorillas - Students will multiply and divide with decimals, compare and order decimals, convert metric measurements, compute the mean, median, mode and range, will be introduced to probability and combinations and  create and interpret function tables and logic puzzles. (Recomm. for 4th – 7th Grades)

Multiplying Monkeys 3 (MM3) Gorillas – Advanced Vedic math techniques.  Students will learn about Vedic techniques including triple digit and higher multiplication, division, and other upper level math techniques. (Recommended for 4th- 7th Grade)

Divide and Conquer (DG) Gorillas -  This class uses Vedic math techniques to solve division problems as well as testing for divisibility and pre-algebra techniques of combining positive and negative integers. (Recommended for 5th – 7th Grade)
